My IMAC is slow only after downloading any files from the internet. I have to restart the computer to fix the issue. Running OS X Lion 10.7.5 with 8 GB memory and about 455 GB available out of 1TB on the hard drive. This situation is really slowing my workflow down.

For starters boot from Lion Recovery and check out the state ofnthe hard drive.
if all is well go into System Preferences > Users & Groups > Login items and make sure there is nothing set up in there that would slow stratup times.
