help with iphone to ipod 5g transition HELP PLEASE URGENT!!

Hi

I am changing as per above for various reasons. I want to get my calendar and contacts data from the iPhone to the iPod. I will have backed up my data to my hard drive. I have a number of questions ( in no particular order )!

1 Will I be safe to sync my data using iTunes with Mac overwrites handheld set as on?

2 Will I need to deregister my old iPhone - BEFORE or AFTER syncing? I guess the iPod will be registered with iTunes as part of the new setup.

3 What should I do with the old iPhone backups and where do I find them? (I am on OSX 10.8.5)

4 Have I missed anything I SHOULD or SHOULD not do?
