tiger problems please help

Ok so i just got to school and on the first day my comp started acted very weird. I have just upgraded my ram to 4gb ddr2 on my mabook (late 07). The computer started to go very slowly and now applications just keep unexpectedly closing on me and also i had the kernel alert "you need to restart your computer. Hold down the power button for several seconds or press the restart button". Is this a software or hardware problem? I cant even open my disk utility because it just closes on me. What can i do to solve this? I thought maybe reset the pram but i wasnt sure. PLease help i need my macbook

Where did you get the memory and are you sure it is Apple compatible? This is what you may have needed depending on the exact model:-

4.0GB Kit (2.0GB+2.0GB) PC2-5300 DDR2 667... (53IM2DDR4GBK) at OWC

Be aware not all PC shop sold memory is Mac compatible as much of the cheaper modules are high density.
