Itunes Recognition Problem

Alright, maybe some of you can help me with this issue. I haven't had any luck finding any information on whether I'm running into a compatability issue. I've got a 4th Generation Ipod and I broke my sync cable for it. I borrowed the sync cable that my brother has for his 2nd Generation Ipod Nano. Now I can't get Itunes to recognize my Ipod. Is this a compatability issue concerning a difference in the two different sync cables? Or do I have a bigger issue with my Ipod? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
