MacBook Airport Failure

I have a MacBook (O.S.X. 10.5.8) and all of a sudden when my airport scans for wireless connections, it will not find connections that I know are there (and that other Macs are able to connect to.) Any thoughts/ideas on why this is happening all of a sudden and suggestions on how to resolve this issue?
