cant boot adter log in screen

i downloaded the update and now i cant get past get to my desktop
...i log in and then it just sits there at the oading screen...but non of my apps or nething load??? just before i restarted for the updat to take effect, i messed up my permissions inthe "get info" thing on the hird drive icon (on the desktop)...does you guys know which of the 2 caused this and what i might be able to do to get past the loding screen

(also, it is not frozen because i cans till change brightness and volume)
