Startup disk full, can't figure out why

My mac keeps prompting me that my startup disk is almost full, though I continue to delete large files and applications and do not download anything. I feel like there might be something lurking in the background eating up at my memory without me knowing it. This happen to anyone? Help? Advice?

Try disk Inventory X - with that you can visually see what is using up hard disk space
