Safari won't open some sites and the same goes for Firefox. (I have OS 10.6.3)

The full Safari message is:

"Too many redirects occurred trying to open “http://xxxxx. This might occur if you open a page that is redirected to open another page which then is redirected to open the original page."

It first happened when I tried to access my public library from abroad, and I thought it was something that the library had set up to prevent access from overseas. But now it's happening when I try to get into the webmail of my overseas provider when I'm in that country.

Mail is working fine and so is Safari apart from the above.

Can someone pse tell me what is happening and a way round?

Thanks

Sounds like a site that is bouncing you to a number of different URLs, possibly even in a circle.

You see, if you open a page, say http://www.example.com, this site may redirect you to http://www.anotherexample.com, and so forth.

Now, some pages may have a link to eachother... so http://www.example.com would point the browser to http://www.anotherexample.com, which then points back to http://www.example.com. This would be an infinite loop, and Safari has built-in protection against this.

The basic protection method it uses, is that Safari does not allow for more than X redirects upon loading a page. Is it possible that the method you use to login requires a lot of URL redirects to different pages, because then Safari may block it out of precaution.

I just checked it using that site mentioned above (Bell Cad.), but that does not seem to be a problem from here (Netherlands). Nor do any other sites (including my own University Library accessed from off-campus) give me any issues...

In other words, I myself cannot reconstruct the bug you guys are getting... Maybe some ISPs are being difficult? Did you change anything else recently?

Just tried again to log into my webmail account ... it doesn't even ask for my user name and/or password. Just comes straight with the message quoted in my first post in this thread: "Too many redirects ... etc"

Perhaps I should ask the ISP ... but it must surely be a Safari and/or OS 10 thing.

Comments appreciated ...

You're pointing at Safari here, but Mozilla Firefox also gave you the same issue, right? Have you tried it with any other browsers and/or PCs/Macs?

You're right but I don't have access elsewhere for the moment. Will try ASAP. Thanks for the suggestion. And Firefox gave the same result.

Hmm, might want to try if you can get another connection to the internet to test it.. or perhaps a close relative of yours who you can call and ask to test if all works well for him/her?

I've contacted the ISP to see if they can throw any light. Guess another connection is the first check to make.

I've just tried my old i-Book and this gives a Safari connection to the public library. So it would seem to be the Safari which I have on the Mac-Book.

I hesitate to screw up but wonder whether I should just download a new Safari. The one which I have is 4.0.5.

But as I also say, the funny thing is that Firefox doesn't connect from the Mac-Book, either.
