After shutting down the computer, I have returned hours later to see the computer is on.
iMac 24" OS 10.6.8. Any ideas? Many Thanks.

Your Mac's Specs
Too many to list. Typically use an Intel iMac for most of my stuff and a Mini for web video.
You, or someone else has probably configured it for automatic wake up.

To check this, do the following:

1. Open "System Preferences"
2. Cick on "Energy Saver"
3. In the lower right hand corner, click on "Schedule"
4. if the box beside "Start or wake" is checked, you've got your culprit. Uncheck it.

Other items might be that you put the unit to sleep and thought you were shutting down and it woke up when a network connection "pinged" it, or some other event (like an external drive waking up for a periodic check) caused it to wake up. If the "Start up automatically after a power failure" item is checked and you lost power or someone unplugged it it might have the same effect.

Followed all your suggestions. My wife knows we have a "spirit" in the house.
Many Thanks, BSD Meister
