Mac G4 Hard Drive

G4 went bad, starts but the screen stays black. Anyways I pulled out my hard drive since its only a 40 G and the laptop is old I dont want to fix it, so now that my HD is out im trying to retrieve my pics thats all I want, and i have this adapter cable SATA/IDE TO USB mac compatible and i tried connecting it to my newer macbook, but it wont read it. Is what im trying to do even possible to retrieve data of HD, by the way im an all time windows user so i do not yet get the hang of macs. please help
