how to enable login screen

my notebook powers up without a login screen. How do i enable this function so that i can protect my machine with a password.

System Preferences - Accounts

highlight 'Login Options' on the bottom left - you'll probably have to click on the lock at the bottom and enter your password to make changes

then on the 'Automatic login' drop down menu, change it to 'Off'

hi bobtomay, thanks for your help. I was searching for all the checkbox options...i didn't know it's in the drop down menu. Have a happy new year!
