Ok, I want to use Pages because of the control I have over my object, shadows that I can create, color fading etc. How can I save an object i create in Pages as a .gif? I tried creating one in Photoshop, but that didn't look anywhere near the way I wanted it. Any advice?

Export to PDF and open them up in PhotoShop, then save as GIF from there

Try importing into iPhoto and exporting from there as iPhoto has a number of format choices. Or using media browser in Pages may allow direct import once you have made required changes to image in iPhoto

If you are using Leopard you can load secrets and choose format for saving screenshots and gif is one that is available.
