I am a potential switcher from a Thinkpad to a Mac, but want to make sure that my (very basic) needs in terms of programs are met.

One of the things I would like is a program lock. I have found many file locks and secure vaults and screen locks, but I would like a program lock, as I may have to allow people to use my computer and there are programs that I would rather they not be allowed to use.

E.g. In Windows, my Outlook has my calendar and emails on it, which I would prefer not have other people access.

Any recommendations? I can't find any for the Mac.
The PC equivalent is Program Protector - Program Protector - Password protect Windows programs and applications

Thanks for any help.

Create a separate non-admin user account - all done.

It's never a good idea to allow othes to use your account. Don't even let my wife log in to admin accounts on my personal machine.

Parental Controls should help you set which applications can be used in the other account. See here for more info.

+1 to bobtomay's suggestion..just create a regular user with no admin privs..and when you DO have to have people use your machine..just logoff or fast switch over to the regular user..problem solved..

I don't even let my wife touch my iMac..she doesn't know how to use a Mac and would cause it grave harm..:)

Just enable the Guest account in OS X. That's what it's there for. ;)

I'm pretty sure it was fixed in 10.6.1 or earlier.
