I saw a thread on ars technica about the same thing, and i just realized i had it too.
When i put in the headphones to listen to anything, they work fine, but when everything is completely silent, the headphones make a weird static-y noise, very faint, and some beeps as well. I was wondering if the second post in this thread is correct:
