Are you asking about which brand is the best? If so then there are many good brands and everyone has their favorite but there are bad ones within each brand. Read the user reviews on internet buying sites and you will get a good idea on which ones are good. I like Seagate myself but the other brands are good too.

You should also get a HDD that's larger than your internal HDD. The larger the HDD the longer it will keep your old files before it deletes them to make room for new data so it's up to you how large you want the HDD.

The size all depends on what you are planning on backiing up. But in terms of a brand, the Lacie d2 Quadra is the best Mac drives out there. I have 2 and love them
