Anyone know where to get a free defrag program for OS X? I need something ASAP to get PS working again.

So far I can not find anything free. There is this but there is a Demo. Can't see what the limits on the Demo are but if I remember right it works for a while.

Coriolis Systems :: Products :: iDefrag

If I find anything total free I will post in this thread.

I think the demo only defrags certain files of a particular size. But if your disk is less than 80% full, fragmentation should not be a problem.

Except that PS needs chunks of continuous space for the scratch disk.

I had about 18gb free and when it was doing the firmware update for the iphone, it went down to 4mb free then back to 18gb. That completely screwed it up and apparently Photo Shop can't see that there's enough continuous space for the scratch disk.

I have to fix that.

The several demo defrags I've tried say that you can't run them from the disk that you're defragging. I'd buy one right now if I knew it was going to work. I have to get this fixed because I have photos I'm working on for a client and if I can't even crop, then I'm 'bout screwed.

I just tried the iDefrag demo here in my iMac. I ran it from the mounted DMG image. It was ready to optimize the Main hard drive. You have to click the unlock and put in the Admin Password but it did work on the boot drive.

I understand your issue and don't want to steer you the wrong way, but it did work here running from the Dmg. I did not try dragging it to the Applications folder.

I purchased Idefrag and it's running. The other demos wouldn't run from the hdd. idefrag wouldn't work because of the 120gb drive.

It's running now and hopefully I can get things running. I think the problem is that I unload photos onto the computer and when they're done they're transfered to a server for editing so I'm constantly moving folders around with sizes ranging from 200mb to 4gb-8gb. It said my drive was 97.9% fragmented.

Edit: I'm just somewhat shocked that OS X doesn't include a defrag program. I know it should generally not need it, but there are occasions when it could help.

Drive Genius 2.1 - works great!

I believe it's also on sale right now. I received an email from MacWorld regarding a special price of $69 instead of the usual $99.

Regards.

Nope, but had you started saving $1.30 per month since this thread was opened, you'd now have enough to buy iDefrag.

If it's free, it's probably not worth the price.
