G3 ibook Memory Problems

The amount of memory I have is erratic. It will fluctuate from 1.4 g to 0 kb. I find I have to constantly restart, so I can get the accurate amount of memory I have available. How may I remedy this?

Would be nice to know what system you have, how much ram, disk space, ... If you have only a little bit of RAM, your System starts to swap (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Swap_space) That could fill your harddisk while you are working on your computer and it would be gone after a reboot...

Agreed. A 300mhz clamshell will be very different than a 900mhz dual usb. Is it doing it for all apps, or are there a few that really set it off?
