What is it with iTunes, why don't they grow up?

I am a fan of English folk music where they sing about all manner of stuff. Lots of folk music of any nationality is earthy and pithy and 'sings' figuratively of life in all its manifestations.

I am most irritated when a song involves the word 'cock' in this case - referring to a male hen and the bl00dy word is starred out.

What on earth is the matter? On the very same computers, a monkey could pull pictures of death, destruction, pornography and all manner of degradation - even politics.

But . . . . . 'we' blank out the word 'cock' - oh please . . who is being impressed, and how?

OK, rant over

The entire world is way to Politically Correct. I would give anything to roll the clock back to 1980 and start over.

I think the general public thinks all this is 'good' for our youth. I, quite frankly, think that is a load of rubbish. It's not doing anything! People my age (13) are very prone to types of music with non stop cursing, what does this do for us though? We already know these words!

Also, I believe you can get clean and explicit versions of the songs, too...

What difference does it make? You know what the word is, right?

The 'difference it makes' is why go to the bother of starring something out when it was totally correct and in no way offensive to leave it alone?

I live in the north of England and our loony local authority says (the childrens' nursery rhyme) BAA BAA BLACK SHEEP is renamed to BAA BAA RAINBOW SHEEP in case anyone is offended! Or possibley retitle them 'rainbow'. A famous and historical area of England during the Industrial Revolution was (and is still called) the Black Country (on account of the soot), where do we stop? Do we rename that too?

If that's the case then (we are very close to real sheep country), we had better go around all the farms in lambing season and shoot the black lambs!

One of my best friends is a black girl who is just as incensed as I am about this small-minded and mealy-mouthed attitude. If these issues were actually important, I wouldn't object, but you can imagine some bland committee sitting down and discussing this sort of horse manure before making it policy!

That's it! I won't say anymore in case the thought-police manage to get a fix on me!

Sorry all, it just really winds me up - there are far more important things going on in the world with famines, disasters and financial ruin . . .

Well then it must be the UK then.

Is this really a huge problem for you?

Good on you Brian! The English language is so rich, with massive subtleties of meaning (massive subtlety???) - anyway, you know what I mean. When supposedly intelligent and well-intentioned people start messing about with it, all they do is make a right mess of it.

When political correctness in terms of gender equality came to NZ, it first hit the libraries and universities, and then public broadcasting. A manhole cover became a personhole cover for example, but the silliest ones I ever heard were from a zealot on radio who described, when reading the marine weather forecast, those working out at sea as "fisherpersons", and a school Principal promoting a book fair "free from salespersonship". I pullest not thy leg. We used to joke ironically about what one might call a mailman - a personperson?

So what is iTunes (for example) going to do with a folk song (imaginary) about a plumber fixing a stopcock? I'd love to see what it would do with some of the songs invented by Kenneth Williams, which were full of sexual innuendo. What would Mr Gruntfuttock and his Cordwangle make of it all?

Oh, and don't worry about thought-police. That's an oxymoron :D

If you are referring to cock, it has several more meanings than 2 :D
