Keyboard shortcuts not working !

Hi ! Im new to this forum and just got an iPad last tuesday... I live in mexico and today when i tried to put accents i discovered i cant....

I tab the letter i want and i indeed see the different characters options but i cant choose any...

I have tried with an spanish and an american keyboard and i have the shortcuts option on....

Please help... Does this mean my ipad simply doesnt work ?
