I know someone who is going to America soon and I was wondering, since the iPhone 3G is much cheaper over there, would it be worthwhile having them buy one for me? How would I go about getting it unlocked after that? Would that cost? And can I use my current sim card in it? (Basic pre-paid Optus in my Nokia 6300)

check out unlocking on google australia search, it does cost, there is a company specialising in it where you must courier your phone to them, they unlock for you. As for your sim card, I am not sure how that works, I guess it depends on whether its with a 3g network

Hmm, the unlocking process seems a bit annoying - having to do it everytime there's a firmware upgrade looks a bit lame. Is there any way to buy it outright in America and have it work over here?
