Quick question, battery reset

27" iMac 2.7GHz Core i5, iPhone 6, iPad Air 2, 4th gen Apple TV
I've been having problem lately with my MBP not going to sleep or shutting down properly from time to time. Someone told me to do a battery reset, but I'm not sure what that may mean to do other than pulling the battery out. Anyone know what this is?
