mpeg to mov for iMovie?

I want to be able to read my videos from my digital camera into iMovie so i can do some simple editing. Problem is iMovie wont allow me to import the mpeg2 files that my sony camera produces.

So if i purchase quicktime pro, this will allow me to convert my mpeg files into mov's. If i do so will iMovie allow me to import these videos?

i just want to be sure before i shell out the 30$
