I have a second-hand MacBook Pro running MacOS 10.6.8 and am interested in upgrading the OS. I found Apple - Upgrade your Mac to OS*X*Mavericks. but am unclear on the first step so I have not done anything. The first step is to verify that my hardware will support the OS. I opened the "About This Mac" window but the web page talks in terms of "Late 2008 Aluminum", etc. It's kind of got an aluminum case but I have no idea how old the hardware is. How do I know whether my hardware will support the upgrade?

Here's what's in my About My Mac window:

Unfortunately not even close. Max./newest OS for this computer is 10.7.5. Newest OS at the moment is 10.9.x (2 OS versions newer). Sorry.

And just so you know…this is a "Late 2006" MacBook Pro.

What really gets in the way of a Mac like that not running Mavericks is the video card/Chipset. That is what keeps most White Macbooks from running either Snow Leopard or Mavericks.

The MacTracker application says that the maximum OS for that machine is 10.7.5. In either case maxing out the memory wouldn't be a bad idea. Officially the memory limit is 3 GB but this page seems to suggest that 4 GB can be recognized.

Beaten to the punch by two guys. I'm getting really slow.
