How can one transfer a video from a DVD onto my Mac Book Pro. Not having a disc drive I can't play them. I do have a portable USB disc drive but it is mains powered so not portable.

Buy a portable USB powered one then. Samsung is a popular brand and not too expensive. You'll then need Handbrake(as long as it's not a copyrighted/commercial dvd).
