I've got my 3G (from O2 in England) JB with 4.2.1 and it recognises my VZW sim card from here in the states.

Any answers on this one? I've got the same problem. My iPhone 3GS is not jailbroken. There is a SIM card in the phone but I keep getting the message "There is no sim card in the iphone you are attempting to activate" when I try to restore the phone through iTunes.

Try ejecting the card use the tool that came with the phone or a paper clip and then reseat the card making sure there is no dirt or corrosion on the sim card strips.
