Optical Digital Audio Volume Control

I just bought a fiber optic audio cable and connected it between my powermac g5's optical audio out port and my recievers optical audio in. It sounds amazing, but my apple system volume doesnt seem to controll the volume that is sent out through the optical cable. Is there any way to specify that I want the system volume to get carried through to my reciver... and then on to the speakers?
