I believe there are some utilities available that will allow you to take your music from the iPod. You might check the iPod section for specifics.

Terminal.

cd to the iPod in Volumes and find the directory called music (it will be nested a bit so hunt around).

Next just cp everything to you home directory (home is ~ btw) and then go into iTunes ... hold on I'll simplify things just let me grab my iPod.

If you're a new Mac user, for the record the Terminal is a program that comes with the developer's SDK for OS X. It looks a lot like the DOS prompt, and functions similarly but not exactly the same. If you don't want to bother it with, www.versiontracker.com should have at least a couple programs to take the music off your iPod. I've run across them before. The one thing you may ahve to worry about is a lot of the time these sorts of things don't keep your mp3s/AACs' information other than the song itself. You may end up having to rename/reclassify them all. Hopefully this won't happen, but it does with certain things.

If you're coming from a windows machine, you should be able to just grab the music off the harddrive...

Disable auto-update and enable disk mode in iTunes and then hook up the iPod.
Then Open the iPod that's on your desktop and find the music in the f... folders.Add that all to your iTunes music library and you should be set.

Once you've grabbed all your music off the iPod you can then hook it up to your pc and copy all your other files to it....

Right I'm back.

First plug in the iPod and in iTunes->Preferences make sure you select "manually manage songs".

Next open up a Terminal. (that's in Applications->Utilities)

Now at the prompt type:

cd /Volumes
ls

You should see a directory name with "iPod" at the end of it, mine has my name at the beginning of it like "<name>??? iPod".

Now type cd *iPod/iPod_Control

Now type ls and you should see a Music directory amongst other things.

Type:

mkdir ~/iPod_Stuff
cp -r * ~/iPod_Stuff

now wait until it finishes (it may take a while depending on how much music you have on there).

next bit to follow ....

It is on all OS X installations regardless of whether you install the Developer stuff.

People shouldn't be frightened of it as it is just a unix window terminal and as by default there is no "root" privileges on OS X you can't damage the OS.

I forgot about that bit.

While in iTunes->Preferences->iPod you need to select the General tab and tick "Enable disk use".

I've just realised that if you haven't done the "Enable disk use" above it probably hasn't even seen your iPod.

Do you have an iPod icon on the desktop?
