Well,
my wife finally broke down and bought a C2D,Macbook Pro with 2gb of ram and an upgraded 160gb hard drive.
I was getting her laptop set up with a bunch of software and everything, when i decided to repair the permissions on this mac. After I did that I decided to run the "verify disk" program when I get the below error. I can't repair the problem after verifying, that option stays greyed out.
any idea's?

I believe you need to boot from the install media and run disk utilities or boot in to single user mode, then run fsck. You can not fix a disk that is in use, in this case the base OS.

Yes sir, I had that same error too - Good thing to know. But a quick question - Is fixing the errors the equivalent of defragging the disk in Windows? If not, is there a problem to defrag the disk and use the HD more efficiently? Do I even need to?

No, it isn't the same thing as defragging.
You really have no need to run any defrag application in OS X.

Will it speed up your disk,...Yes (if you have large files over 20mb that are fragmented)

Is it necessary,...No
