Downloads problem, PLEASE HELP

eMac PowerPc G4 1.25 GHZ Processor, 1Gb Ram
every time I try downloading a file, no matter what kind of file (.doc, App., etc.) I open the download in my downloads stack and instead of mounting anything for me to install it it only opens it in textedit and has lot of weird symbols.
what do I do???

just so you know, I've been trying to download windows media player, and it only opens it in textedit
then I tried music, opened it in textedit
then I tried a video, and wouldn't you know...opened it in text edit

IMAC 20 inch dual core. 16 GB ipad.
It's probably because WMP downloads as an exec and this doesn't work with Mac. Try Flip for Mac and this will handle WMP files.
