My USB no longer shows up on my iBook G4. I have checked other USBs and they still work so obviously the offending USB has a fault. My question is: Is there any way to recover the data, either through my operating system or with special software?

I assume you mean USB flash drive. USB stands for Universal Serial Bus..anyway, if the flash drive isn't visible in your iBook, is it visible on any other computer? If not, it's hard to recover data from a flash drive that can't be seen. No "special" software is going to help either, if the data is important enough and the flash drive doesn't work on any other machine, then you might have to send it off for professional data recovery..
