Im a media student. I've just completed my first commercial which will be aired on local TV stations. I've accepted to the fact that I need more processing power. I need to be able to make a change and encode it much faster for delivery to clients. Currently I'm running a G5 DP 1.8 power mac.
I've noticed that I can pick up Xserve nodes and head nodes for around $800 each. So I'm thinking I might start with a head node and a cluster node and see how I go.
My question is: Is it still worth buying several older xserves over a single new 8 core one? Im looking at two of the G5 DP 2.0
Second question: for someone with an intermediate working knowledge of computers and networking, how difficult is it to set up an xserve system?
