Dvd....

Changed to the Mac last week and cant put down this little metal marvel. Would like to be able to play various region dvd's and tried loading VLC but it didn't want to play dvd. It has been suggested I should turn of the dvd prog so it does not try to start the Mac dvd player......Not sure if this is right or how to do so.
Any info welcome :[
