I have been trying to back up onto a dvd in time machine. But whatever I do the only option I seem to get is the airport. I have set the Mac to open time machine when a new disk is inserted but to no avail. Can someone please help?

Time machine will not backup to optical media... it requires a hard drive

If you have a MobileMe account, download Backup (from the Apple website) and use that. I've found it works fairly well. If you don't have a MobileMe account, I think you can only use the trial version, but I'm not sure entirely.

You can download it here.

Backup 3.1.2

Backing up to optical media really does not make a huge amount of sense, especially once you consider that the media has a finite life expectancy and an exorbitant cost for anything more than single point in time backups.
