ipod takes forever to load

iBook G3 500 MHGz 10GB HDD
My ipod 1st gen ipod takes almost 8 seconds to load a song from the HDD. My other ipod video plays them almost instantly. Are 1st gens supposed to take that long or are they supposed to be faster???

I assume its hard drive based, right? If so, that started happening to my wife's iPod right before the hard drive died...

Well that sucks! My 1st gen is the only iPod i have left considering I sold my iPod video to my girlfriend's sister 8(
