Backup using Time Machine

I've backed up using my Time Machine before without any problems. Today when I tried to backup I received this message.

"Please check your folder permissions, and make sure that you have available space on your backup drive and main catalog's drive.

-My ext HD where I backup has 1.6TB available
-read and write permission
-My Mac HD has 283.79GB available

What am I doing wrong?

Please HELP....

Your Mac's Specs
Main-11" Air, iPhone 6+, iPad Mini 3, Hi-Fi Extras- Too many to count
Open disk utility, select the time machine disk, then select repair disk permissions.
If that doesnt work then Format your time machine backup and then set time machine back up again so you have a fresh backup.

@YellowLab I see that you got this resolved. What was the solution if I may ask? I am sure there are others who would like to know.
