I have four gigs of ram on my macbook pro(10.5.8 if that makes any difference), but my free memory is around 140mb.. The weird thing is that this is with no programs running. It even stays around the 140mb mark after start up. Any ideas of what could cause this?

Open up Activity Monitor and have a look - make sure to click on 'All Processes' at the top.

And then select the 'Real Mem' column to arrange it by highest used.

Free memory is only one of four ways of understanding memory in OS X. Take a look here for more information on how to "properly" read memory usage in Activity Monitor. The amount of free memory you have isn't the only memory that isn't being used.

Would you care to show us a screenshot of Activity Monitor?
