I have an old iBook G3 600MHZ running 10.2.8 I want to take on a backpak trip.
What would be the best update 10.3 or 10.4? Would it struggle to run 10.4?

I have a G3 iMac 500 MHz with 640MB ram than runs Tiger very well. If you have enough ram, you should be fine with it. Don't forget to upgrade to the 10.4.11 combo update afterwards.
I would also recommend repairing permissions when it's all done.

As Soulwar advises Tiger will run very nicely but would boost RAM to 1GB,

Well it's got the basic 256 MB of RAM. How much would it be to upgrade to 1GB?

Go to OWC, it's real easy to pick out the RAM you want for the exact Mac model you have. They carry different brands, all have a lifetime warranty.
