My mom just purchased a new 27" imac. First one in our family. We love it. My question is regarding Time Machine and attaching my portable hard drive to it. We have a airport extreme as our wireless router. Would it be better to connect the portable hard drive there instead of the back of the imac?

If you are only backing up one machine, I would suspect that a direct connection to the iMac would always be a better option.

Absolutely the first backup use a direct connection. After that you can plug into the AES if you desire (I would FWIW).

We have our HD connected to the AirPort Extreme. No issues so far. We are sharing the HD between two machines though. I'd probably connect it directly if it were for one machine.
