I have found I am using the sleep function more and more now but was wondering: if the power goes out while I have it in the sleep mode - can that cause damage to the system (as versus it being turned off)?

When the computer goes to sleep, it turns off the hard disks and parks them, and flushes buffers and caches so the filesystem is clear of any potential corruption. If the power goes out, you're less likely to lose data with the machine in sleep mode than if you have it running.
