Sometimes, if there are thunder storms in the forecast, I may unplug my iMac. I want to make sure that, after I have shut it down, it is OK to unplug it and plug it in from the back of the machine, while it is still plugged into the outlet?

Thanks in advance for any help you can give me.

Absolutely. This is OK. The machine doesn't really care which side of the power plug is disconnected.

BTW, I have just bought a ~ $150 UPS for my Mac. When the power goes out due to thunderstorms, it falls back on the UPS and I have about 15 minutes run time to do an orderly shutdown. This is a great solution and I recommend it.
