Toggling OS effects?

Is there any way to disable or toggle some of Panther's effects such as showing window contents while dragging, drop shadows, fancy buttons/toolbars, etc.? My '99 G4 is doing a decent job running the OS but I'd really like to speed things up by getting rid of superfluous design elements like that which just make my system take a performance hit.

If it's within reason, a RAM upgrade is sure to help

Thanks dtx, I'll look into that program.

I already have almost 900 megs of RAM, I thought that'd be sufficient. The only thing I can think of is that a stick or two of what's in my system (out of four sticks total) is non-Mac-specific PC-100 RAM (Mushkin or Micron, I believe) rather than Mac-specific RAM. Could that cause poor performance? It's always worked fine under 9.2.

You shouldn't have to pay for performance boosts... it's just wrong.

Of course it's not wrong. Would you expect your 486 from 1987 to run Panther or XP, for example? Of course you're going to need to upgrade as time goes by, it's silly to think otherwise.

Anyway, back to my sub-question. Would non-Mac specific RAM hinder the system?

no, as long as it's good ram...go to crucial.com....they'll make sure you get the right ram....some 3rd party ram likes to cause problems.

Yep, they're all good brands. Well at least that solved that "what if." ;) I'll look into other programs to turn off some of the other effects in Panther in the meantime.

Yeah, you're most likely right, but for the moment I don't see any alternative
