I shut down my MacBook today and, when i tried to turn it back on, it wouldn't go. I unplugged the power cord, replugged, etc etc but none of that worked. Finally it turned back on after an hour or so and it said Mac OSX restartd or quit unexpectadly. But I went to Shut Down and it seemed to do everything properly. When it was off it was making that weird noise that it does sometimes every 7 seconds or so when it is on. Is there a certain way to turn off my MacBook every time? Should I make sure every program is closed? And is it even suggested I turn it off, or is Sleep a fine option also?

You probably didn't completely shutdown the laptop before closing the lid, which causes lots of problems with powering up
