Flashing Question Mark

The other day my computer started slowing down and then when I restarted it it started to flash a grey outline of a computer with a question mark in the middle. Is this fatal for my computer? Should I call my computer guy? Does anybody have any tips to fix it?

Some info regarding your machine would be helpful. Do you have the original install DVD that came with your Mac? Use it to boot your Mac and try to verify the hard drive. See this LINK.
