I have a question. excuse me if this is dumb, but I'm still a noob.

In finder window, my 2 hard drives show up under devices, but not my cd drive.

when I put a disk in the cd drive, it will show up on the desktop and in the finder window under places.

Is this correct?

I checked my preferences and I have the box checked to show the cdrom device.

That is correct. HDD show up but CD/DVD only show up when a disk is inserted. Checking the box in Prefences shows the disks only is you look at it again.

If you go to Disk Utility you will be able to see the CD/DVD combo/superdrives.

LOL lucky you! Fancy having it all to learn. Forums are great places to get information from so called 'old' Mac hands.
