I am having an annoying problem. Text that I write seems to be transformed into what seems to be "rich text". When I reopen the document, it looks like this:

Falconer John Cheever\

Infinite Jest David Foster Wallace.\
pard\pardeftab720\sl440\sa300\ql\qnatural

\f1 \cf0 \ul The Wilderness Warrior: Theodore Roosevelt \
and the Crusade for America\ulnone Douglas Brinkley\
\ul Pres. Lincoln: The Death of A Statesman\ulnone W. Lee Miller\
\ul A Fiery Peace in a Cold War\ulnone Neil Sheehan\

\f0 \
}

What have I done wrong, and how do I fix it?

Frustrated, George Sweeney

Are you using TextEdit? If so, it uses Rich-Text Format by default. To change this (on a per-document basis), click Format > Make Plain Text. You can also make Plain Text the default for new documents in TextEdit's preferences.
