Things on desktop grayed out when selected from ITunes.

I have a Macbook Pro. This is somewhat of an Itunes question, but mostly about the Macbook desktop. Anyone know why all of the sudden when I add music to ITunes and add my own artwork... well, I can't? I do this all the time but it won't let me now. I usually find the image on the net somewhere, download it to my desktop and then go into ITunes, click on the album , select "Get Info" and click the blank artwork box which takes me to a page that shows everything on my desktop. I can then double click the image and it puts itself into ITunes. Now when I do that, it's all grayed out and I can't select anything.
