In Windows, there is a taskbar icon that one clicks to minimize all windows and show the desktop. Is there a way to do this on a Mac?

Depending on what Mac you have, a 4 finger swipe UP will show the Desktop. You can do this slowly and hold your fingers on the trackpad if you don't want to stay on the Desktop. You can do it quickly and remove your fingers from the trackpad to "permanently" show the Desktop, then 4 finger swipe DOWN to go back to whatever app(s) you had open.

Even if you don't have a MB or MBP, you can use Apple's magic trackpad to do that. (and there's lots more finger gestures)

4-finger up swipe works like a charm. Thanks!
