Mac Mail Preferences/Rules

Your Mac's Specs
iMac 27" QC, 3.4 GHZ Intel Core:7, memory 16G, 1TB Fusion Drive. iPhone 5S. iPod Classic 160GB.
I keep trying to like Mac Mail but it frustrates me endlessly. I set rules for several things, including setting background color on specific emails. After the 4th rule most of the emails turned red (not just the ones that were supposed to). Deleting the rule did not reverse the changes. New rules didn't reverse them but made it worse. Finally I deleted ALL rules - but I still have a crazy jumble of highlighted emails that makes no sense. I deleted the plist in the library to no effect.
Please help!
