MP3 in Finder, but AAC in Itunes

I have some files that Finder says are mp3 files, and I can listen to them in the preview from the Finder. But when I try to import them to ITunes, it tells me they are AAC files --- and they won't play. Does anyone know why this happens? Why can I listen to it in the Finder and not Itunes?
(Maybe this is basic and I am an idiot.)

They are probably named wrong -- to be sure, you could open them with VLC and then "get info" and it will tell you what codec it uses. They might also be DRM'd.
