• The Mac-Forums Community Guidelines (linked at the top of every forum) are very clear, we respect US law and court precedence when it comes to legality of activity.

    Therefore to clarify:
    • You may not discuss breaking DVD or BluRay encryption, copying, or "ripping" commercial, copy-protected DVDs.
    • This includes DVDs or BluRays you own. Even if you own the DVD or BluRay, it is still technically illegal under the DMCA to break the encryption. While some may argue otherwise, until the law is rewritten or the US Supreme Court strikes it down, we will adhere to the current intent of the law.
    • You may discuss ripping or copying unprotected movies or homemade DVDs.
    • You may discuss ripping or copying tools in the context that they are used for legal purposes as outlined in this post.

I don't know if this is the forum to ask this. If its not, my apologies in advance.

Someone gave me a .wmv file but everytime I try to open it in VLC, the msg:
"To view this movie you need to download MovieXPlayer." then VLC hangs. It then directs me to a page where it says I have to pay $9.95 to download the player. I find this a rip off as there are tons of FREE players out there. It's saved as a wmv file so why are they blocking it that you need to pay $9.95?

Any input guys? Thanks for the help:)

It is a scam and junk software.

My best suggestion, trash the file, forget it, and move on to something else.

You'll likely find that even after you give them your credit card info, there is no movie in that file.

Don't take my word for it, just try googling the name of that player.
